Alright, I’m becoming a bad blogger again but more so because I feel stuck in a holding pattern. I was eagerly awaiting this coming Monday to register for my VPS account and start moving my portfolio of websites over to the VPS account. After finding out they pro-rate their rates and deciding to stop being “cheap” not wanting to pay for one extra week of web hosting, I went ahead and registered my account this week. I was also thinking it was better to leave myself a bit of extra time to move the websites in case something happens. Enough experience with technology has taught me to plan on everything blowing up, including time lines and to ensure you incorporate that into your project plan.
*enter pounding headache here*
I kept hearing about this great tool that allows you to move your entire WHM from one web hosting company to another. And if that didn’t work for whatever reason, you can move each CPanel website individually. I had read some great and not so great things about this utility. After trying unsuccessfully and talking to both web hosting companies, I’ve come to find out that the tool is very unreliable and according to it, I have zero hosting packages and zero websites.
Great! Now I get to do it ALL manually which I was NOT expecting to do. The uh, “good news” is that there is a CPanel backup within CPanel that I can use only I need to figure out how to work this. If not, I’m down to FTP’ing all files and dumping MySQL database data. I’m almost happy to have not done as much work over the years as I would have liked so that out of my 30 domains, there’s really only 2-3 “bigger” sites that need to get moved.
The good news is that after I’ve done this once, I won’t have to again. It’s my understanding that it’s a pain in the ass going from reseller web hosting to VPS hosting. Part of this has to do with resellers customizing their WHM/CPanel installations which can cause problems when moving hosts. It appears I had a bit of a dummied down version of both while hosting websites at Dathorn.
So, can anyone guess what I’ll be doing all weekend…..
